OTTAWA YOUTH COMMISSION
The Ottawa Youth Commission (OYC) is a connector between youth and the decisions made at Ottawa City Council. OYC ensures the opinions, concerns and suggestions of youth are heard on a variety of different issues that affect their daily lives and works with City staff to implement youth recommendations.

They encourage youth through surveys, focus groups, workshops, a conference and online tools to better understand their role in their community and to ensure they are aware that they have a voice in decisions.

The OYC is a group of young people from different schools, communities and neighbourhoods trying to make a difference in the lives of young people across the City.

OTTAWA MAKES THE 'SWITCH' TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
The City of Ottawa is celebrating www.EarthHour and will be asking all residents to participate in the campaign scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 27 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Earth Hour is a global campaign, initiated by the World Wildlife Fund in Sydney, Australia in 2007. The campaign encourages individuals and businesses to join together to demonstrate how a small effort like turning off a light for one hour can make a real difference to our environment.

This year, organizers hope to reach one billion people in more than 1,000 cities around the world.
The City of Ottawa is again joining with Hydro Ottawa, the Ottawa Sun, and the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, and is pleased to welcome a new partner, CTV Ottawa. The City and its partners will be reaching out to businesses and residents over the next six weeks to encourage them to shut off all non-essential lighting for Earth Hour.

For more information, or to register your participation in Earth Hour, visit www.ottawa.ca or http://www.wwf.ca/earthhour.

2010 COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS GRANTS PROGRAM (CEPGP)
The Community Environmental Projects Grants Program (CEPGP) funding has been made available for 2010.  The City is seeking proposals from non-profit organizations wishing to help improve the environment in their neighbourhoods. The deadline date for applications is Wednesday, March 31, 2010.

The program is designed to help the City meet its environmental objectives in the areas of water efficiency, solid-waste diversion, wastewater, the water environment, sustainable development, air quality, and broader climate change issues.

In the past, the City has provided CEPGP grants to neighbourhood groups and non-profit organizations for projects that have improved our community environment. Examples of these successful projects include cleaning river banks, building cattle fences, planting trees, water displays, recycled product playgrounds, purchasing and distributing rain barrels, composting and creating informative web sites that support the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), naturalizing green spaces and more.

Information on the program, and grant application forms, can be found at the City’s website www.ottawa.ca and following the string: residents/funding/community environmental projects grant.  Information may also be obtained by contacting Sami Rehman from the Environmental Sustainability Department at (613) 580-2424   ext.13364.

COYOTE PROBLEM UPDATE
Our Community and other areas of the City continue to be experiencing an increase in the number of coyote sightings. Here is a resolution passed by City Council on February 24 dealing with Wildlife Issues. I believe that this motion is the beginning of the development of a workable, comprehensive strategy in dealing with the over population of coyotes.

  1.  Direct staff to work cooperatively with the MNR to develop and implement an integrated approach to addressing coyote issues, including but not limited to public awareness and education, and response to human safety issues as appropriate.

2.  Request that the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources review its wildlife relocation policies, particularly as they relate to healthy wildlife found in urban/suburban areas.

3.  Direct City staff to provide support to Councillor Thompson in his role as representative of the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (Association of Municipalities of Ontario) on the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources’ Human-Wildlife Conflicts Advisory Group to help facilitate the development of an integrated coyote management strategy that will benefit residents and stakeholders across Ontario.

4.  Recommend to the Chair of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee and the Chair of the Planning and Environment Committee that they convene a joint meeting of those committees to review and develop a wildlife strategy for the City of Ottawa.

5.  THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that staff be directed to develop a comprehensive and integrated wildlife strategy for the City of Ottawa - included in a biodiversity strategy (or like product), centred on wildlife-sensitive planning, with a focus on public education and awareness programs - and involve appropriate City departments, the National Capital Commission (NCC), the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), other relevant agencies and community stakeholder organizations in its development and implementation, including protocols to be required in conditions of plans of subdivision and site plans, and that said strategy go forward to a joint meeting of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee and the Planning and Environment Committee for discussion.

6.  Direct staff to ensure that the lead department role, from the City's side of the matter, be shared by By-law Services and Planning and Environment, as well as the Rural Affairs Office.

A Weekend of Hockey in Osgoode/Manotick
During the weekend of February 4 – 7 , the Osgoode Rideau Minor Hockey Association hosted the annual Don Mott hockey tournament for the Atom, Bantam and Juvenile levels.  Teams from Brockville , Durham & Hull , Gloucester , Nepean and Metcalfe were just a few of the 52 teams playing in 86 games during the 4 day event.  By Sunday afternoon, we had 7 final games on our radar and 6 out of the 7 of them included teams from Osgoode.
Congratulations to our Bantam A House Team who beat out Gloucester 1 – 0 with only 1:38 left in the final period in a true nail biter of a game!  Congratulations to all the players but especially Matt Bugby who was named player of the game in the final.
Many thanks to all of the volunteers who spent tireless hours preparing and attending the weekend event.   Without these parents, this event would never have happened.

Congratulations to all!!!
