NOMINATE A DESERVING VOLUNTEER FOR THE 2010 CIVIC APPRECIATION AWARDS
You can show your gratitude to that special individual by nominating them for a City of Ottawa Civic Appreciation Award.
The City’s Civic Appreciation Awards ceremony is held each spring following National Volunteer Week. This volunteer appreciation program provides an opportunity to nominate and recognize individuals, groups and organizations that volunteer in a variety of ways throughout the city.
Deadline for nominations is Friday, March 26, 2010. Nominations can be completed online at ottawa.ca or you can also download and print the form. Nomination forms are also available at any Client Service Centre or any branch of the Ottawa Public Library.
Awards will be presented in the following categories:
- Citizen of the Year Award (youth, adult and senior)
- Brian Kilrea Award – for excellence in coaching in amateur sports

NEPEAN RIDEAU OSGOODE COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTRE
NROCRC is pleased to begin registration for our 2010 Community Volunteer Income Tax Clinics to the Nepean, Rideau and Osgoode area. We will have 33 tax clinics available across 6 different locations in our catchment area. We are currently only registering residents who live in the Nepean , Rideau & Osgoode area. UPDATE ON THE COYOTE PROBLEM
The coyote problem that has plagued our community for nearly three years is now receiving much needed political action. Our MPP Lisa MacLeod has convinced the Minister of Natural Resources, Linda Jeffrey, to allow the City to trap coyotes where needed in Osgoode Ward and in other areas of the City. As well, the City Community and Protective Services Committee has passed a number of motions regarding coyotes:
- Public Education on coyotes
- Development of a strategy with the Ministry of Natural Resources
- Use of trappers where needed
The Agricultural and Rural Affairs Committee will also be reviewing these motions before it all goes to Council. My work on the Provincial Task Force dealing with Human-Wildlife Conflicts will continue over the next two months.

REGISTRATION FOR CITY'S MARCH BREAK PROGRAMS
The City of Ottawa is inviting residents to register now for March Break programs. Plenty of programming is available during the week of March 15 – 19, when most school-aged children are away from school. You can register your kids for programs like swimming, dance, arts and all sorts of other activities and interests for children of all ages.

Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame Inductees
Vera Mitchell and Dwayne Acres, two outstanding members of Osgoode Ward's Agricultural Community, will be entering the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame this June. The Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame opened in 1980 in the town of Milton, Ontario. There are currently 185 members in the Agricultural Hall of Fame, acknowledging and preserving the contributions to Ontario's Agriculture/Food Industry.
Vera and Dwayne both have long, successful careers in the local and provincial agricultural industry. Vera co-owns a large 1000-acre multi-faceted farm, including dairy, cash crops, custom harvesting and corn drying facilities. Dwayne and his family have operated successful dairy and sheep farms for many years. As well, Vera and Dwayne have been very active in many provincial agricultural organizations.
Congratulations Vera and Dwayne on your well deserved recognition!
Euchre Tournament for Girl Guides International Travel
On Sunday, February 28 at 1:00 p.m., a Euchre Tournament in support of Girl Guides International Travel will be held at the Metcalfe Lions Den, 2803 Eighth Line Road. The cost is $10 per person. Light refreshments will be served and the winners take home great prizes.

An Incredible Fundraiser
Cheryl Deavy, a resident of Greely and a student in the Events Management Course at Algonquin College, is hosting an event with other members of her class and in partnership with the Children’s Wish Foundation (National Capital Region Chapter).
The event is called the “Ultimate Ladies Retreat” and will be held at Issac’s Steakhouse and Grill in Stittsville on March 4, 2010 from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. It will be an evening where participants will be engaged and entertained throughout the night. The event programming includes Belly Dancing, Manicures, Reflexology, Hair and Make-Up, Martini 101 and The Art of Living and Fortune Telling.

A Weekend of Hockey in Osgoode/Manotick
During the weekend of February 4 – 7, the Osgoode Rideau Minor Hockey Association hosted the annual Don Mott hockey tournament for the Atom, Bantam and Juvenile levels. Teams from Brockville , Durham & Hull , Gloucester , Nepean and Metcalfe were just a few of the 52 teams playing in 86 games during the 4 day event. By Sunday afternoon, we had 7 final games on our radar and 6 out of the 7 of them included teams from Osgoode.
Congratulations to our Bantam A House Team who beat out Gloucester 1 – 0 with only 1:38 left in the final period in a true nail biter of a game! Congratulations to all the players but especially Matt Bugby who was named player of the game in the final.
Many thanks to all of the volunteers who spent tireless hours preparing and attending the weekend event. Without these parents, this event would never have happened.

This free course is offered by Ottawa Paramedic Services together with Ottawa Public Health and Ottawa Fire Services. Even if you have taken a CPR/AED course in the past, it is recommended to re-certify each year to ensure you feel comfortable using your CPR/AED skills and knowledge in an emergency situation.
Participants will learn how to: perform CPR on an adult, child and infant; use the automated external defibrillator; help someone who is choking; recognize if someone is having a heart attack; and prevent heart disease.
