Metcalfe Library Incident
On December 28, a young patron of the Metcalfe Library robbed and assaulted a member of the Library Staff. There was also considerable damage to the building.
Ottawa Police have arrested the young offender and are completing the investigation. I have personally spoken with the Librarian involved and expressed my support during these difficult times.
A security review is underway.
The Metcalfe Library was repaired and is reopening the week of January 4.
Ice Storm Damage
As of December 28, in excess of 450 calls have come in for service for trees damaged by the freezing rain. The hardest hit areas have been Wards 7, 8, 10, 13, 15, 18, and 20. The number of work crews has been increased to assist with the volume of work and these crews will continue to work through this week and until the clean up is completed. It has been noticed that as the work is progressing, there is a large volume of limbs and brush being accumulated at the sides of the roads both from City trees and private trees. Forestry crews will be working, in cooperation with Solid Waste Services, and will be cleaning this material up. Brush and branches have to be less than 4 inches in diameter and shorter than 4 feet long to be picked up through the Green Bin program, beginning the week of January 4. If you are not part of the Green Bin program, call 3-1-1.

Five Metcalfe-Greely Boys Qualify to Compete at the Ontario Winter Games
Congratulations to the Gloucester Rangers Major Peewee AA team on winning the Ontario Winter Games Qualifying Tournament on December 20, 2009. The victory entitles the Rangers to represent the Ottawa District Minor Hockey Association (ODMHA) at the Winter Games in Muskoka in March. The Rangers team includes five 12 year old boys from Metcalfe-Greely: Geoffrey Lawson, Trent Pora, Juneau St-Germain, Samuel Tremblay and Quinn Wichers, as well as coaches, Pete Nooyen and Chris Hendrikx, both of Metcalfe. Coach Nooyen set a team goal in September to qualify for the Winter Games, which is the province’s largest multi-sport competition. The Games promote the highest level of competition in Ontario for 2,900 of the best youth athletes in 27 winter sports.
Congratulations Rangers and good luck at the Games!
