POLITICAL NEWS

REDEVELOPMENT OF LANSDOWNE PARK APPROVED
After a very thorough round of public consultation consisting of six public meetings, literally hundreds and hundreds of  residents opinions (emails and phone calls) and 100 public delegations, City Council has finally approved the redevelopment of Lansdowne Park. It is a very complex deal, but one that I firmly believe is an important phase in the development of the City as the First Class Capital of Canada.

Following the consultation process, City Council spent two days debating the proposal before the final vote of 15 – 9 in support of the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group Plan.

Final studies on transportation and the retail component are to be presented to Council for approval by June 2010. Construction could begin early in 2011, taking 32 months and be completed in 2013.

GREEN BIN CHARGES CONTROVERSY
The recent PROPOSAL by the Planning and Environment Committee to charge a “User Fee” for the Blue and Black Box Program as well as the Green Bin Collection has angered a huge number of residents. I support the Green Bin Program but absolutely do not support the proposed method of charging for the service. The cost should remain as part of the garbage collection costs on our property tax bills.

The remaining space in our Landfills will run out in approximately 12 – 14 years. In order to acquire land, prepare and open a new Landfill, it would cost a minimum of $250 million. The process would have to start within 4 – 5 years.

In order to comply with the Provincial Mandate of 60% diversion from our Landfills, we must recycle. Our program of recycling Construction  and Demolition Material, the Blue and Black Box Recycling and the Green Bin Collection will, in total, drastically reduce our Landfill requirements. Probably within 5 years, the Plasco Gasification System will be operational on a much larger scale. The Gasification process, in turn, will significantly reduce the remainder of the household garbage that would normally go to the Landfill. Some people have questioned why the organics could not have been sent to the Plasco Plant when it is operational. It is quite clear  the cost of processing wet organic material at Plasco would have been much too expensive.

I am confident there will not be a “User Fee” for the Green Bin Collection costs. Please contact our office to discuss your concerns.

  • Next important dates in the process are as follows:
    - December 9th – The 2010 Draft Budget is to be tabled at City Council.
    - January 25th to 29th  – City Council, as Committee of the Whole, will hear Public Delegations on the 2010 Budget.

CITY ASKS RESIDENTS FOR MORE FEEDBACK ON FUTURE OF RECREATION SERVICES
The City of Ottawa is calling on all residents to have their say on the future of parks and recreation services. The Parks and Recreation Master Plan was presented to the Community and Protective Services Committee (CPS). It has been posted on www.ottawa.ca  and is now open to public feedback.

Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services began developing a Master Plan in order to provide residents with better parks and recreation services in Ottawa. The completed Master Plan will provide the direction for recreation services in the City for the next 10 to 15 years.

Since last May, residents have provided feedback on important topics: service delivery, accessibility, inclusion, tax support, subsidization and revenue generation. The public input and staff responses formed the basis of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The report will be considered by the CPS Committee once the public has had a chance to respond to the report’s recommendations and guiding principles.

The report is available to all residents, groups, organizations and associations on ottawa.ca/recreation. To have your say, send an email to
recreationmasterplan@ottawa.ca.

OSGOODE WARD ADVISORY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Osgoode Ward Advisory Council will be held on Wednesday, November 25th at 7:00 p.m. at the Kenmore Community Hall.

SECTION OF PARKWAY ROAD IMPROVED
I am pleased to report that our Roads Department has widened the shoulders of Parkway Road between Old Prescott Road and Stagecoach Road. This section of Parkway Road is an important link from Stagecoach Road to the core of the Village. The widening of the shoulders allows for a safer route for people to walk or ride their bikes along this section of road. This has long been a concern of the Greely Community Association and myself and is a temporary improvement, subject to a more permanent solution.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR OTTAWA’S OUTDOOR RINKS
The City of Ottawa invites residents to help make a difference in their community by joining hundreds of volunteers who devote their time to provide access to winter activities every year. Ottawa’s outdoor rinks need volunteers for the 2009-2010 winter season. Grants are available to assist those who choose to volunteer.
If you are interested in becoming a community outdoor rink operator, please contact the City of Ottawa Seasonal Recreation Office at (613) 580-2590 to obtain an application package.

For more information on volunteering with the City of Ottawa, visit ottawa.ca/volunteer <http://ottawa.ca/residents/volunteerservices/index_en.html>.
