JIM WATSON ANNOUNCES NEW AWARDS

The Honourable Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, recently announced a new Community Awards Competition. The program is called Celebration 2010 and it is an opportunity to honour the 'unsung heroes' of community sport and recreation. They are the coaches, association members, trainers, conveners, fundraisers, drivers, chaperones ... who make local sport thrive.

There are numerous programs that recognize and support athletes. This program is not to recognize athletic achievement, but the men and women behind the athletes. Perhaps the neighbour who has been going out when it's 30 below to flood the community rink for the past decade or the individual who has been the convener of Little League baseball for 25 years.

Each MPP in Ottawa will be chairing a selection committee made up of a maximum of 3 individuals from their ridings. Nominations are being solicited in September / October 2009 through contact with and notice to local sports groups, posters, newspaper ads and articles. Recipients will receive a specially minted medal and certificate signed by the Premier at a ceremony hosted by their MPP in January.
  • Submit a one page summary of why you believe  your candidate deserves this recognition
  • Enclose the name, address and telephone number of both you and your Community Sports Volunteer
  • Successful nominees, as well as their nominators, will be notified by their local MPP
  • MPP's will host a Celebration 2010 ceremony in your community in January 2010
Deadline for receipt of nominations is November 13th, 2009

Send your nomination to:
Lisa MacLeod, MPP Nepean-Carleton

RURAL MAIL SAFETY AUDIT

As part of Canada Post's ongoing effort to keep municipalities informed of our Rural Mail Box Safety Assessment activities, we would like to inform you that safety concerns have been raised by one of our rural mail carriers on R.R. # 4, Greely.  As a result, Canada Post will be conducting safety assessments on approximately 66 rural mailboxes on Stagecoach Road and Manotick Station Road.

The priorities for our investigating team are safety and maintaining delivery to the customer's mailbox.  When a mailbox fails a safety assessment, the investigating team looks for another location nearby where the box can be placed and the rural mail carrier can continue delivery.  Only when it is not possible to find a site that fits the safety criteria will we offer the customer an option of receiving his or her mail in a Community Mail Box, or at a Post Office Box in a local Post Office, at no cost to the customer.

Please be assured that Canada Post is committed to rural mail delivery.  Should you require further information on our Rural Mail Delivery Safety project, please do not hesitate to contact  Andy Paterson, Manager, Communications, Rural Mail Delivery.

Senior Flu Clinics
As part of Ontario's flu shot strategy, it is recommended that people 65 and over and long-term care residents receive the seasonal flu vaccine. So, if you are either a caregiver or have a family member over the age of 65, encourage them to get their flu shots and advise them of the ten free seasonal flu shot clinics for seniors being held by Ottawa Public Health. The clinics start October 10th.

Seasonal flu poses a greater risk to the seniors 65 and over, making this group a priority for the vaccination. However, people who were born before 1957 are less likely to contract H1N1 flu virus as they have been exposed to a similar strain during their lifetime.

Osgoode Ward Residents can get  their shots at Osgoode Township High School on Wednesday, November 4th  from 2:30 – 8:30 p.m. Please remind your family member or friend to bring his/her health card to the clinic to receive the vaccination.

As in past years, seniors may obtain their seasonal flu shot from their family physician, but first it is recommended for them to contact their doctor to inquire about availability.

Offering the seasonal flu shots to both people over 65 and long-term care residents is the first phase in the provincial three-phrase vaccine rollout strategy. In the second phase, H1N1 will first be administered on a graduated basis, following the federal government's recommendation for the sequencing of target groups, and then to all residents under 65 years of age.

In the third phase, following the delivery of the H1N1 vaccinations, the seasonal flu shots will be offered free to all residents. Detailed schedules of the last two phases will be released once the vaccine delivery dates and locations are confirmed.

The three-phase strategy benefits the health of all Ottawa and Ontario residents. It addresses higher-risk groups, reduces pressure on our health care system, and optimizes the overall effectiveness of both the seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccines.

For more information on the Seasonal and H1N1 flu viruses, visit Ozone, ottawa.ca/health or contact the Ottawa Public Health Line at (613) 580-6744.
