The Agricultural and Rural Affairs Committee will hold their October Meeting in Osgoode Ward. The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 22nd  at 7:00 p.m. at the Osgoode Community Centre Hall.

I am honoured and feel very privileged to have been elected Chair of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee. PREPARING FOR A BUSY FLU SEASON:
MESSAGE FROM DR. ISRA LEVY, MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
pH1N1 vaccine

For several weeks, Ottawa Public Health has been fully engaged in developing Ottawa’s pH1N1 influenza immunization plan. We expect the pH1N1 vaccine to be available for distribution in late November and are currently looking at the various mechanisms to ensure an efficient delivery system to everyone who wants it.

Safety is a fundamental aspect of all public health interventions. The development of influenza vaccines is now a routine but highly regulated activity, and OPH has full confidence that processes such as safety trials are in place to ensure the best vaccine possible. There will also be close monitoring of both safety and immunogenicity of the vaccine over the fall and winter.

OPH is currently planning for pH1N1 vaccination clinics in late November, including public education and awareness.

Complementary vaccines
In addition to the pH1N1 vaccine, residents can further protect their health this fall and winter by getting immunized for the seasonal flu. People whose health conditions place them at a greater risk of developing severe complications from the flu are strongly encouraged to obtain this vaccine. Also for these people, as well as for young children, the pneumococcal vaccine is available to prevent respiratory complications, such as pneumonia, which may result from influenza. Please encourage people in your network to discuss this with their health provider.

We are planning to hold free clinics for the seasonal flu vaccine from October 10th to November 15th, for a total of five weeks. Dates, times, locations will be advertised to Ottawa residents shortly.

Reducing the spread of the virus
As we have seen during the first wave of the H1N1 pandemic, it takes an entire community – both individuals and organizations – to help reduce the spread and minimize any impacts on everyday life in our city. Whether it is health care professionals, business people, politicians, community volunteers or individual residents, everyone plays an integral role in helping to reduce the spread and mitigate the effects of a possible resurgence of this virus.

Even with today’s modern medical technology, three simple mainstay prevention methods are the best defences against spreading or catching pH1N1 or any infectious disease: wash your hands frequently, cough or sneeze into your arm or sleeve and stay home when ill.

For more information on the H1N1 flu virus, visit ottawa.ca/health or call the Ottawa Public Health Information Line at (613) 580-6744.

50+ RECREATION STRATEGY: HAVE YOUR SAY!

Recreation Talks!, part of the City’s 50+ Recreation Strategy, will include a presentation on current recreation services, followed by a group exercise on preferences of the participants and a review of a draft strategy.
Advanced registration is requested to assist with the planning. Please note that all information will remain confidential. Recreation Talks! sessions are being held in both French and English.

ROAD CLOSURES IN OSGOODE WARD
I fully understand the frustration with road closures while major culverts and bridge structures are replaced. The benefit to this work is the realization that our road infrastructure is in top condition.

Gregoire Road: Closed between Victoria Street and Ray Wilson Road.
Springhill Road: Closed between York's Corners Road and Ninth Line Road.

SNOW GO PROGRAM AND SNOW GO ASSIST PILOT PROGRAM
The City of Ottawa is partnering again with the Seniors Citizens Council and 10 local community support agencies to deliver the Snow Go Programs targeted towards seniors and people with disabilities.

Snow Go Program
The Snow Go Program matches seniors and people with disabilities with contractors and /or individuals who will perform the service of clearing snow and ice from their private driveways and walkways.

The Snow Go Program snow removal workers have been screened by the Ottawa Police through a police record check, and a review of the service fee is performed to ensure an appropriate cost range is charged to the client.

Once matched up with snow removal help, residents are responsible for making payments directly to the individual or contractor. To be matched with a snow removal provider, contact this participating community support agency.

Township of Osgoode Home Support Program Serving Osgoode Ward 613-821-1101 cpowell@osgoodehomesupport.ca

Snow Go Assist Pilot Program
Eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities may apply to receive financial assistance to pay for a portion of their snow and ice removal costs through the three-year Snow Go Assist Pilot Program. Approved participants may be reimbursed for up to 50 per cent of the cost of snow and ice clearing per event, up to a seasonal maximum of $250. The community support agencies have the ability to limit the funds allocated to participants if the demand is high.

For more information about the Snow Go Program matching service and the Snow Go Assist Pilot Program eligibility criteria and application process, contact one of the participating community support agencies, or visit the Services for Seniors section on ottawa.ca or call 3-1-1 (TTY: (613) 580-2401).

OTTAWA GREEN BIN PROGRAM
The City of Ottawa officially kicked off the delivery stage of the Green Bin program, a new recycling initiative that involves collecting residential organic waste and turning it into compost. Over the next three months, green bins will be delivered to the majority of Ottawa households, including residences with individual curb-side garbage pick up and apartments with as many as six units, in urban, sub-urban and rural village areas.

To promote the program, the City of Ottawa is launching an awareness campaign, which includes community liaison officers who will accompany bin delivery across the City, answering residents’ questions about the program. In addition, a comprehensive advertising campaign and the new greenbinottawa.ca  website will provide information and updates on delivery. Delivery of all bins will be complete by mid December.

While the green bins and smaller kitchen containers for indoor use are being delivered this fall, collection won’t begin until the new year. At that time, residents will be able to put their food scraps including dairy, meat, bones and oils, food-soiled paper, yard waste and more at the curb for composting.

Unlike some municipal programs, Ottawa’s Green Bin program will not accept plastics of any kind, including diapers. This will ensure the proper composting of materials at the local, indoor processing facility. More information about the composting process can be found in the Green Bin User Guide, delivered inside the green bin or available for download at greenbinottawa.ca.

COYOTE PROBLEMS IN OUR WARD
New reports of Coyotes running throughout our Community are once again being documented. This issue continues to be a frustrating topic, as the Ministry of Natural Resources is aware of our concerns but, to date, has not taken any substantive action. Please send any information with regard to coyotes to the following:

Be Safe: Check Your Smoke Alarm

The City of Ottawa Fire Services has been on the "Smoke Alarm" campaign for well over 5 years.  You may be aware of the "Wake Up Ottawa" campaign.  This program has fire fighters visiting homes across the City testing, inspecting, and installing smoke alarms.  Station 93 in Greely has participated in this program for the past several years and continues to do so.  The fire fighters in Greely have attended the bulk of residents in Greely with this education program.  The visits inspect for the concerns below. Reminders are always helpful.

Test your smoke alarm

To make sure your smoke alarm is working, you should test it once a month by pushing the test button.

If you think your smoke alarms are more than 10 years old, replace them with new ones.

Change your clock, change your battery

To make sure that the batteries are always fresh, change the battery in your smoke alarm when you change your clock in the spring and fall.

Legal Responsibility

In Ontario, you must have a working smoke alarm outside every sleeping area in your home.  It's the law! It is also against the law to disable a smoke alarm.

Neighborhood Advisory

As you are undoubtedly aware, there was a major fire in our neighborhood which resulted in severe property damage.  At the time of this advisory, we understand that a likely cause of the fire was overheating of the air exchange/air ventilator motor. Such ventilators are designed to exchange air between the inside and outside of a building or home to provide fresh air and are common in many new home constructions.

Please be advised that in August 2008, Venmar CES Inc., a major manufacturer of air exchange/air ventilators issued a voluntary recall after receiving reports of a potential fire hazard associated with these units.

For more information see, http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml08/08369.htm The Venmar website advises homeowners with these units installed, to turn off the ventilator immediately, disconnect it from the power supply and contact Venmar CES to arrange for a technician to install a free repair. For more information, contact Venmar CES toll-free at (866) 698-6283 between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. ET Monday through Sunday or visit the firm's website at www.venmarces.com.
