POLITICAL NEWS

PREPARING FOR A BUSY FLU SEASON:

MESSAGE FROM DR. ISRA LEVY, MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
From the start of the H1N1 flu pandemic (pH1N1) in the spring, Ottawa Public Health has valued direct communications with various partners and stakeholders in our community.  The spread of pH1N1 in Ottawa reached its most intense level in early June - especially among children and youth OPH worked collaboratively with the local school boards to monitor situations where absentee rates rose above 10 per cent of the student or class population.

In addition to the other public health measures such as surveillance and outbreak management, we continue to use risk communication and education as key ways to minimize impacts on the community.

Non-hospitalized care
OPH has been working closely with primary health care providers, including family physicians, family health teams, university and college health services, community health and resource centres, urgent care clinics and the Local Integrated Health Network, to make sure all non-hospitalized patients can be assessed and treated, including people who do not have a family doctor or who, for various reasons, cannot access their regular health care provider.

Planning is underway to identify flu assessment and treatment centres that would be located throughout the city and that would be opened if the need arises for additional primary care capacity. The centres will target people with moderate flu symptoms as well as those at risk of complications. To make the best use of the different arms of our health care system, we are encouraging the appropriate streaming of patients based on severity of symptoms:

·For mild symptoms (as in most cases): Stay home. Get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids (avoid dehydration), limit contact with friends and household members, ensure family members wash their hands often and clean frequently touched surfaces. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help reduce the fever.
·For moderate symptoms – such as worsening cough, fever, fatigue, muscle aches, etc. – see a family physician or primary health care provider.
·For severe symptoms – such as shortness of breath or difficulty breathing – go to a hospital emergency.

Pregnant women and people with medical conditions related to the heart, lungs or immune system should see a physician or primary health care provider within two days of the onset of symptoms. Early treatment can lessen the severity of the disease.

People with the flu can return to work, school or regular activities once the fever is gone and they are feeling better. A cough alone, without other symptoms, is not a reason to stay away from work or school.

SNOW GO PROGRAM AND SNOW GO ASSIST PILOT PROGRAM

The City of Ottawa is partnering again with the Seniors Citizens Council and 10 local community support agencies to deliver the Snow Go Programs targeted towards seniors and people with disabilities.

Snow Go Program
The Snow Go Program matches seniors and people with disabilities with contractors and /or individuals who will perform the service of clearing snow and ice from their private driveways and walkways.

The Snow Go Program snow removal workers have been screened by the Ottawa Police through a police record check, and a review of the service fee is performed to ensure an appropriate cost range is charged to the client.

Once matched up with snow removal help, residents are responsible for making payments directly to the individual or contractor. To be matched with a snow removal provider, contact this participating community support agency.

Township of Osgoode Home Support Program Serving Osgoode Ward 613-821-1101 cpowell@osgoodehomesupport.ca

Snow Go Assist Pilot Program
Eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities may apply to receive financial assistance to pay for a portion of their snow and ice removal costs through the three-year Snow Go Assist Pilot Program. Approved participants may be reimbursed for up to 50 per cent of the cost of snow and ice clearing per event, up to a seasonal maximum of $250. The community support agencies have the ability to limit the funds allocated to participants if the demand is high.

For more information about the Snow Go Program matching service and the Snow Go Assist Pilot Program eligibility criteria and application process, contact one of the participating community support agencies, or visit the Services for Seniors section on ottawa.ca or call 3-1-1 (TTY: (613) 580-2401).

THE GREEN BIN PROGRAM

The City of Ottawa is gearing up to turn the streets green. The Ottawa Green Bin program is a new initiative that will stop organic waste from going to landfill and instead, use it to make compost.

The City has started delivering green bins and kitchen containers to approximately 220,000 households (63 per cent of Ottawa residences) and will continue until December of this year with these deliveries. Pick up of organics will begin January 2010.

The Green Bin program will accept organic materials such as kitchen scraps (vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, bones, dairy products, coffee grounds and filters), yard waste and other organic household materials. It will not accept diapers or plastics of any kind.

The Green Bin program is the latest waste diversion initiative launched by the City. This program will significantly reduce the more than 330,000 tonnes of residential waste that currently goes to landfill each and every year.

Once collected, organic material will be transported to a state-of-the-art, indoor composting facility where it will be converted into nutrient-rich compost ideal for agricultural use.

COYOTE PROBLEMS IN OUR WARD

New reports of Coyotes running throughout our Community are once again being documented. This issue continues to be a frustrating topic, as the Ministry of Natural Resources is aware of our concerns but, to date, has not taken any substantive action.

I attended a Human-Wildlife Conflict Meeting in Aurora on September 16th  where I sent a strong message to MNR to take immediate action to resolve the coyote problem in our Community.

Please send any information with regard to coyotes to the following:

Donna Cansfield, Minister of Natural Resources (donna.cansfield@ontario.ca)
Scott Smithers, Ministry of Natural Resources, Kemptville (scott.smithers@ontario.ca)

Sleeping Mat Project

There is a project to crochet the outside milk bags (the coloured / printed ones) into mats for 3rd world people to sleep on.  It helps prevent soil borne diseases, ringworm etc. as well as keeping the bags out of our landfills.  I have people who crochet these and I would like to try my hand at it as well.  It takes about 250 bags to create one mat but they can each save a life.  I am asking for people to collect these outer milk bags for me so I can get them to the people who do the crocheting. Please email me at kim1bates@yahoo.ca  or call me at (613) 821-3033 if you can collect some and we can arrange to get them to me. Thanks for helping.
