POLITICAL NEWS

MARATHON COUNCIL MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 2nd

City Council’s first meeting since July 8th turned into a marathon 12-hour session.   The issue of the Glen Cairn Flooding situation took four hours to debate.  As a result of deliberation, the Planning and Environment Committee will review the possibility of offering a one-time payment to offset the financial impact of residents whose homes have been flooded.  City Legal Staff have indicated that the City will not be legally responsible for the damages.

The Lansdowne Live Proposal was the other major topic for discussion by City Council.  There are serious concerns being raised by some residents and local businesses about the scale of this Project.   As well, the proposed residential and shopping facilities on site are of concern to surrounding businesses.

Kent Kirkpatrick, our City Manager, has reviewed the Proposal over the past four months.   He deemed it to be ready for Public Consultation over the next two months.  I will provide the dates and locations for these meetings in this Column when this information becomes available.

AGRICULTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING IN OSGOODE WARD

The Agricultural and Rural Affairs Committee will hold the October Meeting in Osgoode Ward. The location has not yet been determined but the date will be Thursday, October 22nd at 7:00 p.m.

COYOTE PROBLEMS STILL EXIST

New reports of Coyotes running throughout our Community are once again being documented. This issue continues to be a frustrating topic, as the Ministry of Natural Resources is aware of our concerns but, to date, has not taken any substantive action.

I am attending a Human-Wildlife Conflict Meeting in Aurora on September 16th, to further discuss this very serious problem.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Hello from O-YA!

Fall is in the air, kids are back to school, and we're starting a whole new season of FUN here at O-YA. Please read this information carefully, as there are some changes this season with ages and hours that may affect you. As always, you can check out our website at www.o-ya.ca for details, give us a call, or send an email. Here's what's new:

Junior Youth Programming

We are making an age change to our Junior Youth programming starting this week. Our Junior Youth programming will now be for 12 - 15 year olds as opposed to 10 - 15 year olds. This will affect some of you who have 10 & 11 year olds who used to come to Jr. programming days. Please note that, in order to attend Jr. Youth days, you just need to turn 12 before December 31st, 2009 (so some 11 year olds may still be able to come!!).

We are also starting a new 'Bring a Friend' program at O-YA this Fall. Each of O-YA's participants will be given 12 'Bring a Friend' cards to use throughout the year. What this allows participants to do is bring a Tween friend into a Jr. Youth program or a Jr. Youth friend into a Sr. Youth program 12 times over the course of the year (always with parent & O-YA Management permission!).

So, if you have a 10 or 11 year old who loves coming to O-YA, please make sure they are registered in O-YA's After School Homework Club program. Here's more about that...

O-YA's After School Homework Club

For 7 - 12 year olds, Tuesday - Friday, 3:00 - 5:30 p.m. Full year (September - June) registration and a commitment to attend daily are required. A donation of $20 (payable monthly) per week per participant is suggested.

This year's enhanced Homework Club includes aspects of Physical Activity, Healthy Eating & Nutrition Education, Wellness & Personal Health Workshops, Cooperative Reading and Homework assistance by Youth Workers and volunteer tutors. Space in this program is limited, and registration is accepted on a 'first come, first served' basis. O-YA will be hosting a 'Parent Information Night' to talk more about this program on Wednesday, September 9th, 7:00 p.m. at O-YA. Please mark your calendar!! Visit our website at www.o-ya.ca or call (613) 826-0726.

Tween Programming

As you have read above, instead of 'Junior Fun Fridays' open to all Tweens, our Homework Club will now run on Friday afternoons. Special events on some Fridays will be open to ALL Tweens, so keep your eyes out for emails and on our website for more details.

Fall Volunteer Information Session

September 9th at 4:00 p.m.

O-YA is hosting a Volunteer Information Session. Please come if you are interested in learning about our volunteer opportunities for the fall season, getting volunteer applications, having your volunteer questions answered and enjoying some pizza and pop.

New Hours for Jr. & Sr. Youth Programming

O-YA's hours, starting this week, are changing a little bit. Our new hours will be:

COMMUNITY POLICING NEWS FROM CONSTABLE FINNISS

Hello Residents

Well it has definitely been a busy summer and with the nice weather still upon us things might continue.

There are several issues that I want to mention.

 1. The has been a dramatic increase in the number of thefts from vehicles. Myself and other CPC officers did a door to door awareness initiative to inform residents of the potential for theft.

Many of you still leave valuables in your vehicles; GPS's, Ipod's, cell phone, wallet and merchandise.  The suspect(s) aren't breaking into the vehicles, they are opening unlocked doors.  Even if your vehicle is parked in your laneway please lock your doors. I know it is upseting to think that we have to lock up everything but this is the reality.  There are several suspect(s) for these thiefts, but no one has been arrested to date.

 2. There has been an increase in the number of Break and Enter specifically in the Metcalfe /Osgoode areas.  On the 20 and 21 of August, Myself, the Neighborhood officers and the Break and Enter team worked a special project in both these areas.  You might have seen officers on Bikes and several unmark cars.    We targeted the parks and local hangout spots. We spoke with many youth/adults and stopped several vehicles.  We were extremely successful that night.  The youth who is responsible for 4 Break and Enters in Metcalfe was identified and charges were laid, and has since been released and is now living at the YMCA in Ottawa.  Another youth who took part in the previous breakand enters was arrested this past weekend after he and another friend committed 2 more.  He has been charged with 4 B/E's.  He too was released with conditions and is back at home in Metcalfe.

3. At the end of June with the help of several residents, another youth from Osgoode was arrested and charged with several B/E's in both the Metcalfe and Osgoode area.  He has since moved and the numbers have dropped dramatically.

4. On the August 20th, we stopped 2 pocket bikes driving recklessly in the area of River Road and Bridge Street.  Neither driver had  helmets on and one bike was stolen.

5. On the August 21st, we stopped a suspicious vehicle and arrested the driver and 2 passengers.  In the vehicle were 2 prohibited weapons and a large quantity of marijuana with a street value of almost $100 000.00 dollars.  As of today all 3 persons have been released on conditions and are back in the community.

6. During other interviews and traffic stops several youth were either in possession or under the influence of alcohol or narcotics and some in possession of weapons.  These were all local youth from the area and indicated that they were either coming from a friends house where the parents were home or that their parents knew they were using.   PLEASE,  I beg you!!!  If you are aware of this you must stop it!!!  As a parent it is your responsibility.  Do you realize that you are completely responsible for these youth until they are SOBER! Not just until they get home.  If you need support or resources please contact myself or their school.  You have no idea how many youth think drugs are legal,  or just no big deal..!!  By allowing this to continue we are only damaging our Kids and their Future...

Please continue to make those calls,

613-236-1222 X 7300 for a report

613-236-1222 X 7500 for dispatch.

Myself at  finnissj@ottawapolice.ca or 613-236-1222 X 3787.
