DEPUTY MAYOR POSITION ENDING
After four months of supporting the Mayor’s office (one month as Acting Mayor and three months as Deputy Mayor), my term in these roles comes to an end September 8th. My Office Staff and I have been very busy throughout this period. Yet, the opportunity to represent the Mayor, the City and our residents at over 50 Ceremonial functions was an honour and a privilege. As well, there were regular Mayoral Events such as hosting Foreign Delegations, attending business meetings, receiving regular updates on major City Projects and signing a tremendous number of official documents.
It was a marvelous experience and personally rewarding! A special thank you goes to Florence Moffatt, our Office Manager, for her extra effort and professional support during those hectic times.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The City of Ottawa wants you to contribute your expertise, enthusiasm and civic pride to one of the City’s Advisory Committees or Boards. The City benefits greatly from the work done by these bodies. Advisory Committees provide on-going advice to Standing Committees and Council and contribute to the development of policies, programs and initiatives. Boards are the governing bodies for such entities as conservation authorities, the Cumberland Museum and the Pineview Municipal Golf Course.
With 23 Advisory Committees and Boards looking for new members and mandates touching on a wide range of topics such as accessibility, business, cultural, diversity, environmental and transportation issues, chances are there’s an Advisory Committee or Board that will interest you.
To serve on a City of Ottawa Advisory Committee or Board, you must be a resident of the City of Ottawa and 18 years of age or older. You can apply to several Committees or Boards at once, but can only be appointed to one of these at a time.
There are two ways to apply - submit a résumé outlining how the Committee(s) or Board(s) would benefit from your membership, and how your work, education, hobby and / or volunteer experience are relevant to its mandate or fill out an application form, which can be obtained from any Client Service Centre or downloaded at ottawa.ca. Please remember to include your home address and an e-mail address or telephone number where you can be reached. All applications must be received by Friday, September 18th, 2009 and should be directed to:

PITCH IN TO GIVE YOUR CITY A CLEAN SWEEP WITH FALL CLEANING THE CAPITAL
Residents of all ages are invited to participate in the City's 4th annual Fall Cleaning the Capital Campaign between Tuesday, September 15th and Thursday, October 15th.
Fall Cleaning the Capital is a great opportunity for high school students to get a head start on their Community Involvement Program volunteer hours, and for families, friends, schools, neighbourhood groups or organizations and businesses to band together on a community cleanup project to help keep Ottawa clean, green, graffiti-free and litter-free.
It's easy to get involved. First, pick a cleanup location. For fall, cleanup efforts are encouraged in areas where litter has accumulated over the summer months. It can be a park, woodlot, ravine, shoreline, bus stop, pathway, schoolyard or any public property requiring tidying up. Suggested spots to target include along fence lines, in open spaces with tall grass, along trails, and around drainage ditches and catch basins. While cleaning up open areas that are maintained and mowed by the City, such as in parks, please do not remove leaves. They will be mulched by City staff to return their nutrients to the soil.
Once you have selected a cleanup location, registration is quick and easy. Register your project online at ottawa.ca/clean or by calling 3-1-1 (TTY: (613) 580-2401). Register on or before September 14th for your chance to win early bird prizes. Registration continues until October 15th, the last official day of the campaign.
While registering, participants may request a cleanup starter kit. Kits are available upon request and can include disposable vinyl gloves, garbage bags, leaf-and-yard waste bags, campaign posters, magnets, stickers and safety tips to assist your cleanup project. Check the collection calendar for when to put out garbage, recycling and leaf-and-yard waste resulting from fall cleanup projects.
For more information and to register, visit ottawa.ca/clean or call 3-1-1 (TTY: (613)-580-2401).

Hello from O-YA!
Volunteering at O-YA
Are you (or is someone you know) interested in volunteering at O-YA? If so, please come to our Fall Volunteer Information Session!
This session will be held at O-YA next Thursday, September 3rd at 4:00 p.m. We will chat about our volunteer opportunities for the Fall, hand out applications, answer questions and have some pizza & pop. Volunteering at O-YA is a fantastic (and fun!) way to get High School Community Involvement Hours, help out in your community and experience the many rewards that come from working with youth.
Please RSVP your attendance to (613) 826-0726 or reply to this email address oya-nicole@rogers.com.
New Program: “Community Kitchen”
We have recently developed a new program at O-YA called “Community Kitchen”.
The gist of this program is that volunteers from the Osgoode Village (and surrounding) community would come to O-YA and teach our Jr. Youth (ages 12 - 15) how to cook one of their favourite meals. So far, we've had volunteers bake lasagna, a vegan meal and a Chinese meal. And, either just one individual can come, or you can bring your whole family along! Although you would be volunteering your time and expertise, O-YA will cover the cost of the ingredients to make your meal. Community Kitchen runs on Saturdays, once a month.
If this is a program you are interested in volunteering for, please let us know! Our first date this Fall is Saturday, September 12th.

Canadian Forces Station Leitrim Charity Golf Tournament
On Sept 11, 2009 Canadian Forces Station Leitrim will host its Annual Shepherds of Good Hope Charity Golf Tournament. The event will be held at the Meadows Golf Course, rain or shine. Proceeds from the past years have totaled over $12,000 raised from corporate, local businesses and local station personnel. All funds raised stay in Ottawa to help people in the community to cope.
As in previous years, we will be selling Sponsorships at a cost of $150.00 per hole to raise monies for the Shepherds. The overwhelming success we had last year is nothing short of a direct reflection and is directly attributable to businesses as you support Shepherds and the troops!
We solicit your support for the 2009 SOGH Golf Tournament. Your contribution(s) will be greatly appreciated, and we hope you will extend your support to us by sponsoring a hole and/or prize donations.
We would like to extend the opportunity to those businesses wishing to sponsor us, to also join us in the tournament. The entry fee will be released soon, our fees include green fees/cart and a meal after the game back at the CFS Leitrim All Ranks Mess. If interested, please submit individual name and/or foursomes to MS Chris McBride at christopher.mcbride2@forces.gc.ca.
On behalf of the Shepherds of Good Hope and the organizing committee, let me extend heartfelt thanks in anticipation for the kindness and sincerely hope you will support us in this worthwhile cause.
