NEW DEVELOPMENT CHARGE RATES APPROVED
Ottawa City Council approved new development charges to replace the Development Charges By-law of 2004.
When a building permit is issued, the City levies a fee on property owners and developers of residential and non-residential properties. The charges assist the City in financing a portion of the cost of new infrastructure and municipal service expansion. In effect, growth helps to pay for growth.
I was the only Councillor to vote against the new Development Charges By-law.
The increases come into effect January 1st, 2010 and will be phased in over the next four years. The new development charges are as follows:
Rural-Serviced $14,579 (up from $8,453)
Rural-Unserviced $12,566 (up from $5,998)
NEW ONLINE SIMPLER BIRTH REGISTRATIONS FOR OTTAWA PARENTS
Parents of newborn children born within the City of Ottawa can now register the birth of their child directly with the Office of the Registrar General (ORG) through a new provincial online registration service. This fully electronic service means that the City of Ottawa will no longer be responsible for collecting live birth registrations for babies born on or after June 22nd, 2009.
The Newborn Registration Service allows parents to complete and submit online the Statement of Live Birth as well as the option to apply for the child's birth certificate and social insurance number at the same time. Authorized medical professionals are also able to submit a Notice of Live Birth directly to the ORG rather than through the municipality.
Parents are required to submit a Statement of Live Birth within 30 days of the birth of their child. For parents who prefer to complete the Statement of Live Birth on paper, forms will still be accepted by the ORG. To register the birth of a child, visit
www.serviceontario.ca/newborn.
With the introduction of the new service, the City of Ottawa will no longer be involved in the processing of birth registrations for any births that occur within its municipal boundaries on or after June 22nd, 2009. Children born after this time must be registered directly with the Office of the Registrar General. However, children born prior to this date will have their registration completed through the City of Ottawa.
For more information on birth registration in the City of Ottawa, visit ottawa.ca.
RURAL BIKE / WALKING PATH FOR OSGOODE WARD
Absolutely Outstanding News! The conversion of the abandoned Rail Line to a Bike / Walking Path from Osgoode Village to Alert Road has been approved. This will connect Osgoode Village to Mitch Owens Road, then off to the Villages of Manotick and /or Greely. It would also allow connections to the urban part of the City for our residents.
Details are still being finalized but this is a huge step forward in connecting our Communities.
PROVINCIAL GROUP TO REVIEW HUMAN - WILDLIFE CONFLICT

The Rural Ontario Municipal Association has appointed me to be part of the Steering Committee that will make recommendations to the Provincial Government.
